When you're looking for a job, you’ll often search for things like ‘jobs near me’, as few people want to commute too far! But once you’ve found a list of local jobs, where do you go from there?

If your background is not in a particular sector, or you don’t have specific qualifications that mean you’ll be searching for a job in just one industry, it can be difficult to know where to start. Just looking for jobs in your local area will generally bring up thousands of results. You’ve therefore got to start applying filters and searching for particular roles. But how can you narrow down your search if you’re uncertain about what job you’re looking for? If you’ve not worked in that industry before, you probably won’t have heard of half the positions available!

First, it’s a good idea to find out what the top industries in your area are, so that you’ll know which sectors are likely to be hiring. You can then start to consider specific job roles in that industry. We’ve outlined the top five industries in different parts of the UK below, based on information from the Office of National Statistics, to help get you started:

Healthcare Jobs Near Me

In pretty much every part of the UK, the most common jobs are roles in healthcare, often by quite a large margin. So if you’re trying to find a job near where you live, the industry most likely to be recruiting is healthcare. Of course there are all sorts of healthcare jobs, many of which will require a degree in fields like nursing or medicine. But there are just as many roles that require no qualifications or prior experience.

You’ll probably come across a lot of healthcare assistant or care assistant jobs, as well as roles in healthcare support work. These could be based in a hospital, care home or in the community, so there’s a good chance that you’ll be able to find a local job.

Retail Jobs Near Me

Another popular sector to work in is retail. As with healthcare, there are so many different job roles, you probably won’t be able to search them all, but you can still narrow your choices. For instance, if you’re great at customer service, working in a retail role within high street stores may be a good option. Or if you’re more confident interacting with people over the phone than in person, pretty much every large retail store has an office that handles supply and distribution.

Essentially, you don’t have to work on the shop floor in order to work in retail - there are lots of different roles available if you expand your search. Consider the aspects of your current or last job you enjoyed, and what skills and experience you have. You can then start to think a bit more outside the box when it comes to local jobs. Search for roles that need these skills, or have particular benefits that appeal to you.

And if you’re struggling to find a local job, recruitment agencies like Pineapple Recruitment can help! Simply get in touch with us to discuss the type of work you’re looking for, and we’ll do our best to find a suitable job for you.
